Background

On a bright Thursday morning, the children at Jesmond Early Education Centre were buzzing with excitement. Fire and Rescue Wallsend were visiting, and everyone knew it would be a day full of fun and learning.

The day began in the Bottlebrush Room, also known as the Preschool Room, where the children eagerly gathered to meet the firefighters. The brave men and women of  Fire and Rescue NSW taught them about fire safety and the important role firefighters play in keeping everyone safe. The children listened intently as they learned about the different tools and equipment used in firefighting, including hoses, axes, and the famous fire engine. They even asked a few questions!

The excitement reached new heights when the children from the Gumnut and Wattle Rooms were invited outside to see the fire truck up close. The wide-eyed children marveled at the bright red fire engine, a symbol of courage and protection. They were thrilled to sit in the driver’s seat, imagining themselves racing to the rescue with sirens blaring. Some lucky children even got to hold the fire hose, feeling the power of the water as it surged through.

The firefighters demonstrated how the hose worked, and the children took turns spraying water, giggling with delight as they aimed at imaginary flames. They learned about the different parts of the fire truck, from the ladders and hoses to the various compartments filled with important tools. The children were amazed at how much equipment the firefighters needed to do their job effectively.

The highlight of the visit was undoubtedly the chance to wear real firefighter hats. The children beamed with pride as they donned the hats, pretending to be firefighters themselves. They posed for photos, showing off their new look and the badges they had earned for their bravery in learning about fire safety.

It was a memorable day at Jesmond Early Education Centre, filled with laughter, learning, and inspiration. The children left with a greater understanding of the importance of fire safety and a newfound admiration for the firefighters who protect their community. And as they waved goodbye to the Wallsend Fire and Rescue team, they couldn’t stop talking about their adventures and dreaming of one day becoming firefighters themselves.
