Maitland City Council has successfully secured over $1 million in funding for essential road safety upgrades in Thornton and Chisholm. These improvements are part of the Australian Government’s Black Spot Program for 2024/25, aimed at addressing high-risk areas.
The funding includes $568,000 for the construction of a roundabout at the intersection of Tigerhawk and Heritage Drive in Chisholm. Additionally, $486,000 has been allocated for the installation of a raised median along Desalis Drive in Thornton.
These areas have been identified as high-risk due to a significant number of accidents. The Tigerhawk and Heritage Drive intersection has seen several serious crashes, while Desalis Drive has experienced a fatality since 2017.
Maitland Mayor Philip Penfold emphasised the importance of these upgrades, stating, “These improvements will provide necessary safety enhancements in two high-traffic areas. They will help protect all road users, particularly residents and commuters who regularly travel through Thornton and Chisholm. This is great news for our community.”
The Council is currently working on determining the timelines for these projects and will keep the community informed as they progress to the construction phase.
