The City Hall in Newcastle was abuzz with excitement as over 800 residents gathered to hear Dr Saul Griffith, a renowned entrepreneur, author, and inventor, discuss the future of clean energy at the “Electrify Everything” event. The free event aimed to inspire Novocastrians to participate actively in transitioning to a clean energy future, highlighting the benefits of electrification powered by Australia’s abundant solar energy.
Dr Griffith, a strong advocate for renewable energy, emphasised the economic and environmental benefits of electrification. He argued that fully electrifying homes and vehicles could significantly reduce emissions and save households up to $5,000 annually on energy bills. Griffith, known for his work with the non-profit organisation Rewiring Australia, has been a key figure in advocating for ambitious energy policies, including a proposed “HECS-style” loan scheme for household electrification.
Lord Mayor Nuatali Nelmes expressed pride in the community’s engagement, noting the city’s long-standing commitment to sustainability. The event is part of the Empowering Newcastle series, which continues with upcoming discussions on electric vehicles and low-emissions transport, involving key stakeholders such as Transport for NSW and the University of Newcastle. The series aims to foster dialogue on renewable energy and the role of local initiatives in achieving net-zero emissions.
Dr Griffith’s presentation underscored Australia’s potential to lead in the global energy transition, leveraging its high solar radiation and growing adoption of rooftop solar systems. He highlighted that Newcastle, with its strong community and policy support, is well-positioned to become a model for other regions.
The City’s efforts to promote electrification are part of a broader strategy to address climate change and improve local living conditions. The series continues with more events, including a talk by NSW Climate Change Minister Penny Sharpe, focusing on the renewable energy transformation in the Hunter region.
