The Maitland City Council has illuminated the Morpeth Bridge in blue to celebrate the NSW Blues’ thrilling victory in the State of Origin series. First opened in 1898, the heritage-listed Morpeth Bridge is a significant historical structure, being one of the oldest timber truss bridges in New South Wales. It has served as a vital link between Morpeth and the surrounding areas for over a century and underwent significant rehabilitation works in 2010 to preserve its iconic status.
Architectural lighting was installed on the bridge during Morpeth’s bicentenary celebrations in 2022, allowing it to be themed for various significant events. For the recent State of Origin victory, the bridge has been lit in blue to honor the Blues’ hard-fought 14-4 win over the Queensland Maroons in Brisbane. This victory, marked by two late tries, secured the shield for the Blues for the first time since 2021.
The State of Origin decider was a dramatic and intense match, with the Maroons leading 4-2 until the 61st minute. The Blues turned the game around with quick succession tries by Bradman Best and Mitchell Moses. The game was not only a testament to the Blues’ resilience but also a historic moment, being their first series-deciding Game III victory in Queensland since 2005. The Morpeth Bridge’s blue lights are a fitting tribute to this memorable achievement, reflecting the community’s pride and the bridge’s longstanding importance in the region.
