newy.com.au – Police are appealing for CCTV, dashcam and mobile phone footage after reports of six unregistered trail bikes being ridden dangerously in East Maitland on Thursday evening.
Port Stephens-Hunter Police District officers are investigating the alleged riding near the intersection of Mitchell Drive and Stronach Avenue between 6pm and 7.30pm on 22 October 2026.
In an appeal issued on Saturday, NSW Police said officers who attended encountered a large group of riders, many allegedly engaging in dangerous behaviour and trying to evade or provoke police.
District commander Acting Superintendent Lisa Jones said police had to balance enforcement against the risk of harm, particularly when riders were travelling at speed or dangerously. She warned that encouraging dangerous riding for social media attention, including stunts or weaving through traffic, could have serious or fatal consequences.
“There have been incidents in recent weeks elsewhere in NSW where members of the public have been injured by riders acting irresponsibly, and we know it can make people feel threatened and frightened.”
Acting Superintendent Jones said police were developing strategies to target the behaviour and planning future operations. She called for information to help identify and investigate those responsible.
Anyone with information or footage about the East Maitland incident is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000. Information is handled confidentially. Police reminded the public not to submit reports through NSW Police social media pages.
