newy.com.au – Newcastle Fringe says an anonymous donor will provide up to $5,000 in dollar for dollar matching funds for its AusArt Day appeal, potentially raising $10,000 to support independent artists at the 2027 festival.
The combined total depends on the community contributing $5,000, with donations matched only until the donor’s limit is reached.
The festival says it provides venues, technicians, ticketing, marketing and other support to help independent artists present their work, while returning the majority of ticket revenue directly to them.
“Newcastle Fringe exists because our community believes independent artists matter. This AusArt Day, every dollar donated goes twice as far, helping more artists bring their stories, creativity and talent to the 2027 festival,” chairperson Rebecca Fitzgibbons said in the appeal.
Held each March, Fringe also brings artists and audiences into Newcastle’s venues, restaurants, bars and cafes. Organisers say more than 18,000 people attended the 2026 festival and more than $243,000 was generated for participating artists. They put its contribution to the local economy at more than $1.25 million.
Fringe says community support helps it remain independent, giving artists a place to try new work and earn income from their performances.
