newy.com.au – Crews have filled 1,668 potholes on state roads across the Hunter since June 2026, according to new figures released by the NSW Government.

The government also reported 5,029 potholes were patched on the region’s state roads in the last financial year. Across NSW, it says more than 625,000 have been filled on state roads since April 2023.

Roads Minister Jenny Aitchison said she joined a maintenance crew working overnight on Tarro Bridge as workers repaired a heavily damaged section of road.

“Late on Friday night, I joined a road maintenance crew on the Tarro Bridge as they repaired a large section of road that had been riddled with potholes.”

The government said crews were patching potholes, resurfacing damaged roads and carrying out more substantial repairs across the state. Work was being scheduled overnight and outside peak travel periods where possible to reduce disruption for motorists.

The 2026/27 NSW Budget allocated $1.85 billion to maintaining state roads, including $1.3 billion for regional roads, according to the government.

Separately, Hunter councils are to receive more than $17.2 million in state funding to maintain local roads over the next financial year. That funding is distinct from the maintenance work reported on the state road network.

The government has also announced the $1.74 billion Regional Corridors Upgrade Program, including $1.37 billion for upgrades along the Newcastle to Dubbo and Muswellbrook to Armidale freight corridors.

Minister for the Hunter Yasmin Catley acknowledged further repairs were needed and encouraged motorists to report road damage.

“We know there’s more to do, especially on Hunter and Central Coast roads, and I encourage every driver to report potholes by calling 131 700 so we can get them fixed.”

Motorists can also report problems through Service NSW’s pothole and damaged road reporting page.
