newy.com.au – WIN Network has confirmed it will build a new state-of-the-art control room at the NBN studios in Newcastle, saying the change will make NBN News “truly produced locally” rather than controlled from Brisbane.
The commitment is a significant update to WIN’s planned changes for NBN News, which will see the long-running weeknight bulletin move from a one-hour program to a dedicated 30-minute local bulletin from Monday, 29 June.
WIN says the new format will contain more local news than the current hour-long program because the existing bulletin includes a mix of local, national and international stories, while the new 5.30pm bulletin will focus entirely on local news, local sport and local weather.
The bulletin will be followed by Nine News at 6pm, giving viewers 90 minutes of local, national and international news coverage each weeknight.
From Saturday, 27 June, NBN’s weekend news services will transition to Nine News at 6pm with no local bulleton on weekends.
WIN says construction of the Newcastle control room will begin shortly, the company is also exploring opportunities to expand NBN News content across digital platforms.
The network says NBN News will continue to be produced and presented from the NBN studios in Newcastle, supported by locally based journalists and camera operators in Newcastle, the Central Coast, Taree, Port Macquarie, Coffs Harbour, Lismore and Tamworth.
Those teams will continue covering communities across Northern NSW and the Gold Coast, with WIN saying its acquisition of NBN Television does not change its commitment to regional news.
WIN Network Chief Executive Andrew Lancaster said the changes represented an important investment in local news delivery.
“Regional communities value strong local journalism and local storytelling, and that remains central to our strategy for NBN,” Mr Lancaster said.
“The changes to our weeknight bulletins are designed to deliver more local content, more local stories and a stronger connection to the communities we serve across Northern New South Wales”.
Viewers continue to voice their concerns over the loss of weekend news bulletins and the pre-recorded nature of the new bulletins which may affect the coverage of breaking news.
