newy.com.au – Survivor’s R Us has opened its new permanent community hub at Cardiff, after a $2.8 million federal funding commitment announced on April 1, 2025 helped the charity buy its own premises when a rent increase put its former site at risk. The hub officially opened on Thursday 2 April.

Founded in March 2017 by Ann-Maria Martin, herself a survivor of domestic violence, Survivor’s R Us is a not-for-profit charity supporting people affected by domestic violence, homelessness and unemployment. The organisation says it provides free professional counselling, a discount food warehouse called The Pantry, an op shop, dignity bags, children’s toys and donated household furniture, while local reporting described the service as also offering support groups, affordable groceries and second-hand goods.

Shortland MP Pat Conroy said the funding, first pledged ahead of the 2025 federal election, had secured the future of a service that had been at risk after the rent increase. “For nine years, Survivor’s R Us has been there for the most vulnerable in our community – for survivors of domestic and family violence, for those experiencing homelessness and for those struggling to find work.” “With our $2.8 million investment, this critical work will continue for years to come as they now have a permanent site and a secure future.” “With a new home, this is a new chapter for Survivor’s R Us – and I’m grateful for what they continue to do every day for our community.”
