newy.com.au – A proposed upgrade of the Newcastle Link Road and Minmi Road intersection at Cameron Park has received strong community backing, with almost 89 per cent of respondents supporting the preferred design.

The NSW Government is investing $5.8 million in planning for the project, which is intended to ease congestion, improve safety and support future growth along the corridor.

Consultation held between 19 September and 17 October 2025 attracted more than 530 submissions, including 502 completed online surveys. More than 97 per cent of respondents said the upgrade was important.

While support for the preferred design was strong, residents also called for construction to begin as soon as possible and raised questions about proposed traffic lights and lane configurations. Traffic noise and potential construction impacts were among the other concerns identified in the consultation report, which includes Transport for NSW responses to key issues.

Cessnock MP Clayton Barr said the project would help address pressure on the busy intersection.

“I’m pleased to see another step taken for this important project which will help relieve pressure on a known bottleneck for thousands of motorists each day.

“This is an important project for our growing communities. Upgrading this intersection will improve safety, ease congestion and help local families spend less time stuck in traffic and more time at home.”

Wallsend MP Sonia Hornery said Newcastle Link Road was a major arterial route connecting residential, commercial and recreational areas.

“With up to 55,000 vehicles using Newcastle Link Road each weekday – this upgrade is critical in improving safety and travel times to help people get time back in their day.

“I would like to thank everyone who provided feedback which will help form the environment assessment and concept design.”

WSP Australia has been appointed to develop the concept design and environmental assessment. Investigation work will be carried out over the coming months, while Transport for NSW continues consulting the community and key stakeholders.

A construction timetable has not been confirmed and will depend on future funding and planning approvals.
