newy.com.au – Lake Macquarie has marked NAIDOC Week with a flag-raising ceremony at the Multi-Arts Pavilion, mima, as the city joins national celebrations recognising 50 years of honouring Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.

Community members, local leaders and representatives of the city’s Aboriginal community gathered on Tuesday for the ceremony, which highlighted this year’s NAIDOC Week theme, 50 Years of Deadly.

Lake Macquarie Mayor Adam Shultz said the event was an important opportunity for the community to come together, reflect and celebrate.

“NAIDOC Week is a time for us to recognise the strength, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, and to celebrate the world’s oldest living cultures,” he said.

“This year’s milestone of 50 years of NAIDOC is a powerful reminder of how far we’ve come and the journey still ahead. It recognises the contributions of our Elders, leaders and communities, and inspires the next generation to continue building a strong future grounded in culture and connection.”

NAIDOC Week has grown over decades from a movement for recognition and rights into a national celebration of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander history and culture. This year’s theme honours the Elders, artists, educators, advocates and young people who have shaped that journey, while acknowledging the strength and resilience of communities today.

Cr Shultz said the ceremony’s strong annual attendance showed community support for NAIDOC Week and respect for First Nations culture.

“It’s fantastic to see so many people share in this important moment,” he said.

“Events like this bring our community together to listen, learn and walk forward with a deeper understanding and respect for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.”

NAIDOC Week runs until 12 July, with events continuing across Lake Macquarie. They include an art workshop at Windale Hub, bilyabayi, at 11am on Thursday, a storytime session at Toronto Library, tirrabiyangba, at 10.30am on Friday, and an afternoon of dance, workshops and live music at MAP mima on Saturday.

Bahtabah Local Aboriginal Land Council will also host an Eastlakes NAIDOC family fun day at Pelican foreshore on 17 July, with pony rides, a sausage sizzle and live music. More information about council’s NAIDOC Week activities is available on the Lake Macquarie City Council website.
