newy.com.au – Motorists are being advised of changed traffic conditions on Lookout Road and McCaffrey Drive at New Lambton Heights this weekend as work continues on the Rankin Park to Jesmond section of the Newcastle Inner City Bypass.
Transport for NSW said crews will install the final layer of asphalt, known as the wearing course, and complete line marking from 7pm on Saturday 28 March to 5am on Monday 30 March, weather permitting.
McCaffrey Drive will be closed in both directions between Marshall Street and Lookout Road during the work, along with the northbound off ramp and the bridge at the Lookout Road and McCaffrey Drive intersection.
Access along Lookout Road will be maintained, with traffic diverted onto the Newcastle Inner City Bypass southbound on-ramp and managed under single-lane contraflow conditions. Detours of up to five kilometres will be in place and motorists are being warned to allow up to 15 minutes extra travel time.
Bus stops west of Marshall Street will be closed during the work, while the bus stop opposite Elbrook Drive will be temporarily relocated to the west of the Elbrook Drive intersection. Pedestrian and cyclist access will be maintained on McCaffrey Drive and on the eastern side of Lookout Road.
Traffic control, reduced speed limits and signage will be in place, with motorists encouraged to use Lake Road, Main Road, Macquarie Road and Hillsborough Road where suitable to reduce wider impacts on the network.
Heavy vehicles with ground contact or an overall width greater than 3m have been advised to contact the project team at least one day before movement on 1800 818 433, with significant delays expected if prior contact is not made. Freight operators have also been told the project operates on UHF channel 52 at the Southern Interchange.
Transport for NSW said vehicles travelling under permit must not leave the approved route unless an updated permit is obtained from the National Heavy Vehicle Regulator. Motorists have been urged to drive to the conditions and follow the directions of signs and traffic controllers.
The Newcastle Inner-City bypass is expected to open in the coming months.
