newy.com.au – Maryland Public School has officially joined a vital initiative aimed at ensuring students start their day with a nutritious meal. The Minns Government’s expanded Foodbank’s School Breakfast 4 Health program has grown from 500 to 676 schools in under two years, is providing essential support to students across New South Wales, particularly in the face of rising cost-of-living pressures.

The $8 million partnership between the NSW Government and Foodbank aims to see 1,000 public schools participating in the program by 2027. Maryland Public School is one of the latest additions, joining other schools across the region, such as Cardiff Public School, Lambton High School, and Belmont North Public School. The program ensures children receive a balanced breakfast, including milk, juice, cereal, fruit, and bread, helping them stay energised and ready to learn.

Statistics from Foodbank highlight the program’s success, with 80 per cent of participating schools reporting increased attendance and 89 per cent noting improved classroom engagement. Educators have observed that access to a healthy breakfast not only supports students’ nutrition and well-being but also enhances concentration and academic performance.

Maryland Public School’s involvement highlights the growing recognition of the program’s impact in the Newcastle and Hunter regions. Schools like Blackalls Park Public School, Islington Public School, and Rutherford Technology High School are already reaping the benefits, with teachers reporting positive behavioural changes and better focus among students.

Minister for Education and Early Learning, Prue Car told Newy 87.8 that many families are struggling with daily expenses. “The Foodbank program ensures children are given the best chance to be ready to learn while easing financial pressures on families,” she said.

Foodbank NSW and ACT CEO John Robertson told Newy 87.8 that a full stomach is crucial for children to perform their best in the classroom. Meanwhile, Toronto Public School Principal Kim Witt told us how the program fosters life skills, such as clearing your own plate, using manners and helping those around you are key values of breakfast club.

As the initiative continues to expand, schools in Newcastle and surrounding areas, including Thornton Public School, Tomaree Public School, and Singleton Public School, are playing a crucial role in ensuring students receive the nourishment they need to thrive. Maryland Public School’s participation is another step toward providing a healthier, more focused start to the school day for thousands of students across NSW.
