Newcastle is poised to become a key player in New South Wales’ growing night-time economy, as the Uptown Accelerator District Showcase returned for its 2024 edition, featuring local business teams from across the state. Hosted at Fortress Sydney, the showcase spotlighted innovative plans to transform various communities into vibrant, must-visit destinations after dark.

This year, the event featured regional participants for the first time, with teams from Newcastle, the Central Coast, and Illawarra-Shoalhaven joining their Greater Sydney counterparts. Over 20 district teams presented their unique visions in short, two-minute pitches aimed at attracting support from government and corporate partners, such as American Express, Organic Food Markets, and local councils.

Newcastle’s delegation, representing the city’s independent bar scene, focused on establishing Midtown as a hub for craft beer and live music. The vision, combining Newcastle’s brewing expertise with its rich cultural history, aims to create a night-time destination that caters to both locals and visitors, showcasing the city’s potential beyond the usual daytime attractions.

The Central Coast also made its mark with an ambitious plan to revitalise Gosford’s main street, transforming it into a cultural hub. This vision promises to breathe new life into the area by hosting regular night markets, live performances, and food festivals. The team behind this proposal aims to position Gosford as a key attraction for both local residents and tourists.

Meanwhile, Fairfield’s Canley Heights looks to become a food lover’s dream, with plans for gourmet dining experiences and extended trading hours for local restaurants and entertainment venues. Seng Ly, Managing Director of VIP Karaoke Bar in Canley Heights, explained how the program has sharpened his vision for the community:

“Working through the Uptown Accelerator gave me the tools to collaborate with local leaders and businesses, driving initiatives that will bring real value to the area. It’s exciting to see how we can shape Canley Heights into a late-night destination.”

The Uptown District Accelerator Program, which spans twelve weeks of intensive workshops, is part of the NSW Government’s broader Vibrancy Agenda. It aims to empower business owners to collaborate and craft engaging experiences that enhance the state’s night-time economy.

Looking ahead, the NSW Government is offering a further $5.5 million in funding through the third round of the Uptown Grant Program. Applications for funding open in December, with the goal of fast-tracking many of the ideas presented at the showcase.

Michael Rodrigues, the 24-Hour Economy Commissioner, praised the creativity and determination of the participating teams, stating:

“Newcastle and the other regions have shown that there’s much more to our night-time culture than just pubs and clubs. By harnessing local stories, talents, and traditions, these businesses are building experiences that will attract both locals and tourists, ensuring economic growth beyond city centres.”

The showcase marks a significant step forward for regional areas like Newcastle and the Central Coast, as they look to redefine their night-time economies and create unique, engaging spaces for all to enjoy.
