Beaumont street has now re-opened.
A 22-year-old man lost his life following a fatal stabbing on Beaumont Street. The incident has sparked a major police investigation, with authorities searching for a group believed to be involved.
Just after 2:15 am on Sunday, 17 November 2024, CCTV footage captured a group of individuals hurrying down Beaumont Street. Shortly after, police received multiple reports of a stabbing at the location. Officers from the Newcastle City Police District quickly responded, finding the young man suffering from critical stab wounds. Community members assisted in administering first aid before paramedics transported him to John Hunter Hospital, where he later passed away.
Wendy Ewin, a John Hunter Hospital patient said “He died in JHH ED this morning whilst I was a few rooms away. Doctors/Nurses were very busy trying to save him.”
Police Superintendent Kylie Endemi, District Commander, explained the seriousness of the situation, saying: “They found a 22-year-old man suffering from significant stab wounds. They assisted members of the community in providing first aid to that male person before he was transported to John Hunter Hospital. That 22-year-old man from Newcastle succumbed to those injuries and lost his life.”
Throughout the early hours of the morning, officers combed the area for clues. Beaumont Street, a typically bustling hub, was cordoned off, bringing local activity to a standstill. Police worked alongside the State Crime Command’s Homicide Squad as part of their strikeforce, dusting for fingerprints, collecting evidence, and interviewing witnesses.
Authorities believe the attack stemmed from a violent altercation between the victim and a group of people. Investigators have obtained extensive CCTV footage from nearby businesses and spoken to numerous witnesses. While no arrests have been made yet, police continue to appeal for anyone with information, including dashcam or mobile phone footage, to come forward.
Police are unable to confirm whether the weapon has been recovered. However, they have reassured the community that there is no ongoing threat to public safety.
By Sunday afternoon, the police tape was removed, and Beaumont Street reopened to traffic and pedestrians. The tragic incident has left Hamilton residents in shock as police work to bring those responsible to justice. Anyone with information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
