VIDEO: Emergency services took the plunge and raised $40k at Merewether for Special Olympics

newy.com.au – More than 170 police, emergency service workers and community members braved the cold at Merewether Ocean Baths on Sunday to raise money for Special Olympics Australia. Over $40,000 was raised.

The Newcastle Polar Plunge began with a torch run and opening ceremony before participants entered the water at 10am. More than $37,000 had been raised locally ahead of the event, with the money supporting Special Olympics programs and athletes across the Hunter.

Northern Region Commander Assistant Commissioner of NSW Police David Waddell was among those taking the plunge.

“The Polar Plunge is a fantastic opportunity for police and our community partners to come together and support the incredible athletes of Special Olympics Australia,” Assistant Commissioner Waddell said.

“Every dollar raised helps provide opportunities for people with intellectual disability and autism to participate in sport, build confidence and create lifelong friendships.”

Minister for Police and Counter-terrorism Yasmin Catley said the event demonstrated the broader role police played within the community.

“Policing is about more than enforcing the law – it’s about earning trust, building relationships and showing up for your community which is what today is all about,” Minister Catley said.

The Polar Plunge is organised by the Law Enforcement Torch Run, a charity involving members of the NSW Police Force and other law enforcement agencies. Events are being held at 26 locations across Australia between July 4 and August 30.

The national campaign had raised more than $626,000 by Sunday, exceeding its $625,000 fundraising target. Money raised helps provide coaching, equipment, competitions and grassroots sporting programs for people with intellectual disability and autism.

This year’s fundraising also comes ahead of the Special Olympics Australia National Games, which will bring more than 900 athletes together to compete across 12 sports in Melbourne from October 19 to 23.
