City of Newcastle has reached a significant milestone, having invested more than $1 billion in infrastructure projects across the city over the past decade. This achievement was celebrated during a special event last night, which also highlighted the major initiatives undertaken during the current Council’s three-year term.
Among the key coastal projects contributing to this billion-dollar milestone are the revitalisation of the Newcastle Ocean Baths, the ongoing development of the Bathers Way at South Newcastle Beach, and the delivery of sand nourishment to mitigate coastal erosion at Stockton.
Record budget allocations have also been directed towards enhancing the city’s road, bridge, footpath, and cycleway networks. Extensive stormwater upgrades and major creek rehabilitation projects have been implemented to reduce the risk of flooding during severe storms.
Lord Mayor Nuatali Nelmes highlighted the Council’s record $375 million investment in infrastructure during the current term. “This record-breaking investment marks a significant milestone for the city, with over $1 billion of infrastructure works delivered for our community over the last decade to create a liveable, equitable, and sustainable city,” Cr Nelmes said.
“We’re investing in the things that matter to our residents, from city-shaping projects that create a legacy for future generations, to essential services that make an everyday difference in the lives of Novocastrians.
“We’re giving back to our community with more than $3 million in support for local businesses and community groups through our grants and sponsorship programs, and leading the way in areas such as housing delivery, planning innovation, climate change, and sustainability.
“Through the delivery of these record infrastructure programs, community services, and initiatives, we continue to cater for the needs of our growing community while stimulating Newcastle’s economy and supporting new jobs.”
In addition to these achievements, major recreational projects have been delivered to meet the community’s needs. These include significant upgrades to sportsgrounds across Newcastle, the stage one redevelopment of No.1 Sportsground, and the ongoing playground upgrade program, which has seen the construction of popular active hubs at Stockton and Wallsend.
Looking to the future, City of Newcastle continues to demonstrate leadership in climate change action and environmental protection. The Newcastle Environment Strategy and the Sustainable Waste Strategy provide a 10-year roadmap for building a more sustainable city, ensuring future generations benefit from these efforts.
