newy.com.au – A 21-year-old man has been charged after a woman was allegedly shot in the arm outside a Gateshead unit last week.

Police were called to a home at Charlestown about 9.20pm on Tuesday, 30 June, where they found a 50-year-old woman suffering a gunshot wound to her arm. She was treated by NSW Ambulance paramedics before being taken to John Hunter Hospital.

Investigators later established the woman had allegedly been shot a short time earlier outside a unit on Paper Street, Gateshead.

Police have previously said two women and two men were leaving the unit about 8.45pm when they were confronted by two people with covered faces, one of whom was allegedly armed with a firearm.

Two shots were allegedly fired during the incident, with one striking the woman in the right upper arm and another hitting a window of the unit.

Officers from Lake Macquarie Police District, assisted by State Crime Command’s Raptor North, began investigating the shooting.

Following inquiries, police executed a search warrant at a home on South Street, Windale, about 6pm on Tuesday. During the search, officers allegedly seized items of interest including ammunition, knuckledusters and electronics.

A 21-year-old man was arrested and taken to Belmont Police Station, where he was charged with discharging a firearm with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, firing a firearm in a manner likely to injure persons or property, and using an unauthorised firearm.

He was refused bail to appear before Bail Division Court 2 on Wednesday, 8 July.

Police say inquiries into the incident are continuing.
