newy.com.au – City of Newcastle will unveil more than $30 million worth of Australian artworks at Newcastle Art Gallery on 19 December during an after-hours event marking the opening of the venue’s fourth new exhibition space.
The unveiling is part of the staged expansion and reopening of the gallery, which is being transformed through a multi-million-dollar project ahead of a full reopening planned for February 2026. City of Newcastle says the works now on show are drawn from a nationally significant collection that is gradually being reintroduced to the public as each new space is completed.
More than 130 works will be displayed in the new gallery, with colonial-era paintings and modern Australian icons among the highlights. Artists to be featured include Joseph Lycett, William Dobell, Grace Cossington Smith and Margaret Preston, alongside other key pieces from the collection.
The launch will coincide with the return of the gallery’s popular Friday Night Sounds after-hours program. The free event on 19 December will run from 5pm to 8pm and will feature live music by Newcastle singer-songwriter Nina Romeru and a wildlife drawing workshop with local artists.
Newcastle Art Gallery Director Lauretta Morton OAM said the response since the community was first invited back into the building in September had exceeded expectations. “We have been overwhelmed by the support shown since we opened the doors to the community on September 26 for their first look at some of our new galleries,” Ms Morton said.
She said strong early visitation had demonstrated the community’s appetite to reconnect with the institution and its collection. “Almost 11,000 people have already visited the Gallery and been treated to a taste of our nationally significant collection alongside major First Nations commissions and new acquisitions,” Ms Morton said.
Visitors have been travelling from beyond the Hunter to see the transformed spaces. “We’ve had visitors coming from across Australia and around the world including Austria, Canada, Finland, France, India, Mongolia and Switzerland,” she said.
Behind the scenes, staff have continued preparing the remaining galleries so they can safely host works from the collection over the long term. “At the same time, we’ve been continuing to meticulously prepare the rest of the Gallery’s spaces in line with the strict environmental conditions required for the long-term presentation of works of art,” Ms Morton said.
The fourth new space opening this month is one of a total of 13 new exhibition areas that will come online as the project progresses. “We’re thrilled to be able to open our fourth new gallery space later this month, but this is still just the beginning, with more art and another nine exhibition spaces to come next year,” Ms Morton said.
City of Newcastle said the entire gallery is scheduled to reopen in February 2026 in conjunction with a major collection exhibition and the unveiling of a new commission by internationally renowned artist Fayen d’Evie. Until then, the gallery is open Friday to Sunday each week from 10am to 4pm.
The expansion has been backed by $5 million from the Australian Government under the Regional Recovery Partnerships and $5 million from the New South Wales Government through the Regional Recovery Package. A further $12 million has been contributed by the Newcastle Art Gallery Foundation, made possible through the Valerie and John Ryan bequest, the Margaret Olley Trust and long-running community fundraising, while another $1 million is being sought via the Foundation’s current public fundraising campaign.
