newy.com.au – Lake Macquarie residents will be able to repair, donate or recycle their old bicycles at a new community event at Speers Point Park on Sunday 30 November 2025.

Lake Macquarie City Council says the inaugural Great Bicycle Recycle will help keep bikes and parts in circulation rather than going to landfill, while getting more people ready to ride as the summer months approach.

Described as a community bike repair and recovery event, the Great Bicycle Recycle will run from 10am to 3pm at Speers Point Park, bringing together bike mechanics, recycling experts and local riders.

Free 15-minute bike check-ups will be available on the day, along with bike maintenance workshops, a drop-off point for old or unused bicycles, pre-loved bike sales and live music from Deejay Mathmatics. Revolve Recycling and Cheeky Bikes will provide expert support throughout the event.

Lake Macquarie Mayor Adam Shultz said fixing or donating old or unwanted bikes would divert waste from landfill and give new life to bikes that might otherwise sit unused in garages and sheds.

“Collecting unwanted bikes for reuse and recycling is a part of Council’s circular economy commitment to keep materials in use, reduce waste and encourage repair over disposal,” Shultz said.

Under the program, Council says all repairable adult bikes will be professionally refurbished and resold with warranties, while children’s bikes will be repaired and passed on to children in need through the Revolve Recycling Foundation. “Each donation helps reduce waste, saves energy and supports an eco-friendly alternative to buying new bikes,” Shultz said.

Bikes deemed unsuitable for repair will not be dumped, but instead dismantled for spare parts and scrap metal recycling to recover as much material as possible.

The day will also focus on giving riders basic skills to look after their bikes. The two maintenance workshops with Cheeky Bikes, at 11am and 12.30pm, will cover how to clean and lubricate a bike chain, check brakes and keep tyres properly inflated.

Council says the event is free to attend, but registrations are required for the workshops due to limited places.
