newy.com.au – Lake Macquarie City Council has launched a new youth sponsorship program on Monday 24 November 2025 to support high-performing under-18 residents from across the city.
The Youth Excellence Sponsorship (YES!) program will provide financial assistance to emerging local talent across sport, science, arts, technology and academia, with Council aiming to reduce the cost barriers that can stop young people from competing at higher levels.
Council says the program will be worth $32,000 a year, with grants of up to $1,000 available for teams or groups and up to $300 for individual applicants who reach high-level or elite competition. The support is aimed at Lake Macquarie residents aged under 18 who are representing at advanced levels in their chosen field and need help covering costs.
Lake Macquarie Mayor Adam Shultz said the initiative reflected Council’s commitment to backing young residents with proven talent and dedication. “We know the cost of competing at an elite level can be a major hurdle for families,” he said. “This program ensures our young people have the chance to shine on the biggest stages and represent Lake Macquarie with pride.”
To be eligible, applicants must show exceptional achievement and commitment, supplying evidence such as awards, rankings or invitations to high-level events. Council says this requirement is designed to ensure the funding goes to young people already performing at a high standard and on a pathway to further success.
The program also places an emphasis on inclusion, with Council stating it wants to support diverse pathways for young people and inspire wider community pride through their success stories. That includes recognising excellence across a broad range of pursuits, from traditional team sports to academic, scientific and creative fields.
Emerging Lake Macquarie track and field and football athlete Mackenzie Preston-Poole welcomed the additional support for young competitors facing growing expenses. “It does cost a lot of money for my family,” the 15-year-old said. “There’s the travel, all the new clothes, the shoes and other things. The older athletes can get sponsorships, but it’s a lot harder when you’re younger so this would be a big help.”
Council says the YES! program is designed to complement, rather than replace, other forms of assistance available to young people, by specifically targeting those who have already reached high levels of performance and need an extra boost to keep progressing.
Applications for the Youth Excellence Sponsorship program are now open, with full eligibility criteria and application details available via Council’s website at lakemac.com.au.
