newy.com.au – A $285,000 federal investment has delivered a new irrigation system at Wallsend Park in Newcastle, with the project now complete and local clubs welcoming safer, more reliable playing fields.

The upgrade is intended to improve the quality and resilience of one of Newcastle’s busiest community sports grounds, supporting grassroots sport while cutting water use and maintenance demands. Federal Member for Newcastle Sharon Claydon said the funding, provided by the Albanese Labor Government, was about giving local players and families access to high-quality facilities close to home.

The new irrigation system will service the park’s playing surfaces used by cricket, rugby league and soccer teams that call Wallsend Park home. According to the project announcement, the system is designed to provide more consistent turf coverage and better drainage, making the grounds safer and more playable throughout the year, including during dry conditions.

By reducing water use and helping the fields stay green and durable, the works are also expected to ease the workload on volunteers and council staff who maintain the venue. The investment forms part of a broader federal focus on community sport and open space, with Wallsend Park identified as a key hub for local competitions and training.

Claydon said she was pleased to see the upgrade finished at such a heavily used venue. “Wallsend Park is one of Newcastle’s busiest community sports grounds, and I am thrilled to see these irrigation upgrades completed,” she said.

She said the funding was targeted at supporting local clubs and the many players who rely on the park each week. “This $285,000 investment is all about supporting local sport, making sure our clubs have safe, high-quality facilities and our players have a reliable surface to train and compete on,” Claydon said.

The Federal Member said the project would have lasting benefits for the suburb and the wider region. “These improvements will benefit hundreds of players and families every week and help keep Wallsend Park in top shape for years to come,” she said.

Wallsend Cricket Club president Nathan Holloway said the new system was already making a visible difference for teams using the ground. “The project has been extremely well received and is already proving to be a gamechanger for our club,” he said.

With the irrigation system now in place, local clubs are expected to take full advantage of the improved surfaces as competitions and training sessions continue at Wallsend Park, backed by the Albanese Government’s ongoing commitment to community sport.
