EAST OF MORISSET – A 32-year-old woman has been charged after a house was destroyed by fire on Mooranga Road in Mirrabooka about 10.40pm last night.
Police said officers from Lake Macquarie Police District arrested the woman at the scene and took her to Toronto Police Station, where she was charged with damage property by fire/explosion more than $15,000. The sole occupant was able to evacuate and was not injured, but the home was destroyed, according to police and Fire and Rescue NSW.
Fire and Rescue NSW (FRNSW) said crews were notified at 10.40pm and contained the blaze in a little over an hour, with NSW Rural Fire Service (RFS) leading several trucks from both FRNSW and RFS.
Peninsula Rural Fire Brigade said it was activated to a “structure fire in Mirrabooka” and, on arrival, “crews were faced with a fully involved 2 storey structure with threats to neighbouring properties which were dealt with swiftly.” The brigade added: “With the assistance of Dora Creek Rural Fire Brigade, Cooranbong Rural Fire Brigade, Wyee Point Rural Fire Brigade and Fire+Rescue NSW Station 383 Morisset, the fire was knocked down and extinguished.”
Peninsula RFB stated at the time that the “cause is unknown and the scene is in the hands of Lake Macquarie Police District who are awaiting the attendance of specialist Fire Investigators.” Police later confirmed the arrest and charge, and said no other injuries were reported.
FRNSW information recorded the incident as received at 22:40, with RFS assigned and FRNSW assisting, and noted it took more than an hour to get the fire contained. Multiple appliances from both agencies attended to protect neighbouring properties and ensure the fire was fully extinguished before the scene was handed to police.
Police said the woman was refused bail and is due to appear before Bail Division Court 2 on Monday 18 August 2025.
Further inquiries are continuing.
