newy.com.au – Newcastle’s Darby Street Festival is set to return on 8 November 2025 with a full day of free entertainment, food, and family-friendly activities, marking a major celebration of local culture and community. From midnight to 8pm, the popular eat street will be closed to traffic between Bull and Queen Streets, transforming into an alfresco precinct for locals and visitors to enjoy.
Now in its latest iteration, the festival will feature live music, pop-up bars, market stalls, and a wide range of creative activations from Darby Street’s businesses. Activities on the day will include gemstone hunting with Matthews Jewellers, live in-store performances at Abicus, and Christmas-themed workshops by Palinopsia and Coco Monde. Urban Deli will offer a Spanish-themed dining experience, while Hey Tilly will host a garden-party style custom jewellery station. A pre-loved fashion pop-up by Ramjet and the Made on Darby market stalls will also be part of the line-up.
Local traders gathered this week to mark the three-month countdown to the event. Sarah Madden, owner of Hey Tilly, said the festival is an opportunity to reignite the character that defines the precinct. “We’re absolutely thrilled to shine a spotlight on Darby Street — reigniting the vibrancy, character and pulse that define it,” Ms Madden said. “Over time, the street has evolved, but its steadfast dedication to an eclectic, locally driven mix of small businesses — each deeply passionate about crafting memorable products and experiences for the Newcastle community — remains unchanged.”
City of Newcastle’s Strategy and Innovation Strategic Advisory Committee Chairperson, Councillor Declan Clausen, said the festival builds on recent efforts to make Darby Street a more welcoming space. “Darby Street is a place where people come together to share good food, great company, and vibrant street life,” Cr Clausen said. “Through our investment in streets as shared spaces, we’ve helped breathe new life into Darby Street, creating a safer, more welcoming space for pedestrians and local businesses alike. The return of the Darby Street Festival builds on that momentum, and I can’t wait to see the community come out in force to celebrate everything that makes this precinct so special.”
The event is being delivered under the City of Newcastle’s Special Business Rate Program in partnership with the Newcastle Business Improvement Association, with a focus on accessibility, inclusion, and showcasing homegrown talent. Entry is free and the public is encouraged to attend and support the businesses that help shape the street’s distinct identity.
