newy.com.au – Maitland will once again rally together this weekend to take a stand against domestic abuse, with the second annual Move for MADA Family Fun Run and Event scheduled for Sunday, 27 July, at Harold Gregson Park from 9am to midday.

The free event, organised by the Maitland Against Domestic Abuse (MADA) Committee, aims to raise awareness and offer support to those affected by domestic abuse. It also invites the broader community to learn about local services and show solidarity with survivors.

“All local charity and non-government organisations specialising in domestic abuse support are encouraged to participate,” organisers said. Free stalls will be provided to these groups to recognise their work in advocacy, education and crisis support.

The event will begin with speeches from MADA members, service providers, and survivors sharing their stories. Participants can then choose from a 2km, 5km or 10km course, following a warm-up led by Finley from Strength and Performance Coaching.

Family-friendly activities will run throughout the morning, including a barbecue hosted by the Rotary Club of Rutherford Telarah, children’s zones led by Tillys Play and Development Centre and Maitland Girl Guides, live music by Nathon Coles, and a climbing wall sponsored by Samaritans. Free face painting, hair braiding and a community art project by Maitland Regional Art Gallery will also be featured.

A MADA Committee member who has lived experience of domestic abuse said, “Looking back, I wish I was able to recognise the signs sooner and reach out. That’s why we’re bringing this event to the community, and that’s why we’re encouraging everyone to educate themselves on this important topic.”

Recent data from the NSW Bureau of Crime Statistics and Research (BOSCAR) highlights the scale of the issue, with around 2,500 domestic violence incidents reported to police each month. However, studies suggest this reflects only 40 percent of actual cases, due to widespread underreporting.

“Every action we take against domestic abuse saves lives and creates a safer future,” the committee said.

Donations to support MADA can be made online via the Humanitix registration page, on the MADA website, or at the event. Local businesses are also encouraged to participate, promote the event, or consider sponsoring future initiatives.

Registration is open at: events.humanitix.com/move-for-mada. More details can be found at mada.org.au or on the Move for MADA Facebook event page.
