newy.com.au – Lake Macquarie City Council has moved to permanently safeguard Green Point Reserve in Belmont, approving the reclassification of 118 hectares of land from operational to community use on 14 July 2025.
The decision means the entire 152-hectare reserve, situated on the lakefront between Belmont and Valentine, is now protected from future development. Mayor Adam Shultz said the move marked a long-awaited milestone in the preservation of the area. “It’s high time this important parcel of land is safeguarded and protected in perpetuity,” he said. “We now have reassurance that future generations will be able to enjoy the natural beauty and serenity of Green Point Reserve.”
Acquired by Council in 1994, portions of the land had remained classified as operational, which allowed for infrastructure works. With those works now complete, the reclassification ensures the reserve’s long-term conservation. The area is home to eucalypt forests, she-oak woodlands and a diverse range of birdlife including sea eagles, and features a 7-kilometre network of bush and lakeside trails, picnic facilities, and interpretive signage. Restrictions remain in place to preserve its natural state, including bans on pets, motorised vehicles and camping.
Council also endorsed a draft Local Strategic Planning Statement (LSPS) for public exhibition, outlining priorities for land use, infrastructure and growth across the region over the next two decades. The draft plan is open for community feedback until 12 August.
In a separate motion, councillors supported a Mayoral Minute calling on the Australian Government’s Net Zero Economy Authority to develop an Energy Industry Jobs Plan. The proposal aims to support workers affected by the eventual closure of Eraring Power Station. “Lake Macquarie is the host city of Australia’s largest coal-fired power station and at the frontline of energy transition,” Cr Shultz said. “This plan will ensure that all impacted workers receive the support they need to transition into their next career choice with the utmost support.”
Council also approved a development application for major works at a private property in Arcadia Vale, allowing demolition, a two-storey addition, a new garage and a swimming pool at 141 Donnelly Road.
