Newcastle teenagers will take the spotlight these school holidays, with a local production of Calvin Berger opening at the Civic Theatre Playhouse on 10 July 2025. The musical comedy, which explores the struggles of high school life, is part of City of Newcastle’s Upstage at the Playhouse program and is being staged by Hyde Entertainment, led by 18-year-old director Seb Smee.
The show, recommended for audiences aged 12 and up, follows the story of a teen grappling with insecurity about his appearance who enlists a friend to pursue the girl he secretly loves. Discount tickets are available for full time students. Also on offer at the Civic Theatre are several family friendly performances including The Gruffalo’s Child, Madagascar The Musical and Disney’s Frozen Junior, presented by Hunter Drama.
Newcastle Museum is offering a range of hands-on experiences throughout the July holidays. Highlights include Caring for our Coast, an Australian Museum exhibit showcasing marine and coastal artefacts, and the Maths Magic Science Show aimed at older children. The popular Bricks 4 Kidz LEGO® workshops are also returning, with bookings required and a $20 fee per child.
Local health practitioner and Darkinjung woman Sarah Corrigan will present a bush tucker tasting session, featuring ingredients such as finger limes and native syrups. All events at the museum, apart from the LEGO workshops, are free and do not require bookings.
With more than 115 playgrounds and nine skate parks across the region, City of Newcastle is encouraging families to enjoy the outdoors during the break. Upgrades to playgrounds have received more than $14 million in investment over the past seven years. South Newcastle Beach Skate Park now includes the Hunter’s first wheelchair-accessible bowl, while the Stockton Active Hub features the region’s first street-style skate plaza.
Blackbutt Reserve remains a popular destination with wildlife exhibits open daily from 10am to 4.30pm. The Carnley Avenue precinct now includes a café offering meals and picnic packs. Picnic facilities are available from 7am to 7pm, and visitors can check online for shelter bookings and feeding times.
City and Wallsend libraries are hosting a mix of tech and craft activities, including beginner coding workshops, an introductory Dungeons & Dragons session led by an experienced Game Master, and Super Smash Bros gaming events. Younger children can enjoy a playdough party or create artwork with Uncle Amos Simon, a Worimi, Birpai and Wiradjuri man, who will also teach traditional rope-making techniques.
