newy.com.au – A long-awaited solution to one of Lake Macquarie’s most notorious traffic bottlenecks is now on the table, with the Minns Labor Government releasing concept designs for a $16 million upgrade of the Speers Point roundabout. The plans are open for public feedback until 28 July 2025.
The proposed works target the intersection of Five Islands Road, T C Frith Avenue and The Esplanade, which has long been a source of frustration for local motorists. The upgrades will include new dedicated turning lanes, roundabout metering using traffic lights during peak periods, and improved safety features for pedestrians and cyclists.
Traffic modelling predicts that travel times will be cut by over 50 per cent during morning and evening peaks, and by 25 per cent during Saturday peak hours. These improvements come as the North West Lake Macquarie region is expected to accommodate an additional 12,000 residents and 6,000 new jobs over the next two decades.
The concept design has been refined following community consultation held in 2024, incorporating feedback from 59 formal submissions and more than 500 contributions to an online interactive map.
Minister for Roads Jenny Aitchison said the government was taking action on the issues that most affected local communities. “The Speers Point roundabout has been a daily frustration for thousands of motorists. We’re not just talking about fixing it, we’re delivering a solution,” she said. “This $16 million investment will slash travel times by more than half during peak periods. That means families getting to work and school on time, and businesses moving goods more efficiently.”
Independent Member for Lake Macquarie Greg Piper welcomed the announcement, highlighting the outcome of sustained advocacy. “This $16 million investment proves that when you work collaboratively, you get results,” he said. “These improvements will make a real difference to thousands of families trying to get to work, school and appointments. It’s about giving people their time back.”
Lake Macquarie Mayor Adam Shultz also expressed support, describing the upgrade as a critical piece of infrastructure. “The NSW Government’s concept design is a crucial step towards removing one of the worst traffic snarls in the Hunter Region,” he said.
Community members can review the design and submit feedback online at haveyoursay.nsw.gov.au/speers-point, via email, or by post until 11:59pm on Monday, 28 July 2025.
