newy.com.au – Maitland’s heritage sites are set to receive a $172,900 boost through the 2025–2027 NSW Heritage Grants Program, part of a record $8.65 million investment by the Minns Labor Government to preserve and promote historic places across New South Wales.

Three projects in Maitland will benefit from the funding. Maitland City Council has secured $100,000 for remediation works at Maitland Town Hall, a significant civic building in Central Maitland. The project will focus on managing structural issues caused by rising and falling damp to ensure the hall remains a functional and valued space for community and civic events.

An additional $47,900 has been allocated for conservation works and investigative studies at Glebe Cemetery in East Maitland. The grant will support ongoing preservation efforts and the creation of a dedicated website to compile historical research, mapping and documentation collected since the cemetery program began in 2015. The online resource aims to increase public access and community engagement with the site’s historical records.

A further $25,000 will go towards the Maitland Heritage Programs Fund under the Local Government Grants stream. This funding will help support local heritage properties, contribute to Council’s heritage publications—particularly those focusing on Pender architecture in collaboration with the University of Newcastle Archives—and provide access to expert heritage advice for development assessments.

Minister for Heritage Penny Sharpe said, “Our record investment highlights the Minns Labor Government’s commitment to preserving the historic places that matter the most—whether it is iconic buildings, local landmarks or sites of deep cultural significance.”

Member for Maitland Jenny Aitchison welcomed the announcement, saying, “This is great news for Maitland and Maitland City Council. It is a credit to the people and grassroots organisations who advocate for the preservation of our local heritage sites for everyone to appreciate and enjoy.”
