newy.com.au – Ten paramedic interns have begun their on-road training across the Hunter region as part of a statewide effort to bolster emergency health services. The new recruits were announced on 27 June 2025, with four placed in Hunter Zone 1 and six in Hunter Zone 2, where they will begin the practical phase of their 12-month internship.

The placements are part of a broader intake by NSW Ambulance, which welcomed 127 new paramedic interns and 28 trainee emergency medical call takers during an induction ceremony at the State Operations Centre at Sydney Olympic Park. The initiative forms part of ongoing efforts to strengthen the state’s frontline health workforce.

Since January, more than 500 paramedics and 80 emergency medical call takers have joined NSW Ambulance. While the call takers will be stationed at control centres in Sydney and the Northern region, the interns assigned to the Hunter will soon be responding to real emergencies as they continue their training in the field.

Minister for Health Ryan Park said the new intake represents a continuation of the service’s commitment to patient care. “I want to extend a warm welcome to these new starters and thank them for choosing a rewarding career with NSW Ambulance. Their journey is just beginning but these new staff continue a legacy of care and commitment,” Mr Park said.

“The induction of these new health staff reflects the continued growth and evolution of NSW Ambulance. Each new officer has already demonstrated the core values of integrity, compassion, and service which remains central to NSW Ambulance.”

Minister for the Hunter Yasmin Catley welcomed the group, saying their presence will reinforce the region’s emergency response capabilities. “It’s fantastic to welcome these new paramedic interns to the Hunter. They’re stepping into a vital role and we couldn’t be prouder to have them here,” Ms Catley said.

“Our region deserves strong, reliable frontline care and these interns will be a valuable part of that. They’re not just training – they’re making a difference. We’re committed to delivering better health outcomes for people in the Hunter – and that starts with supporting the dedicated paramedics who serve us every day.”
