newy.com.au – Nearly $40,000 in government funding has been committed to controlling noxious weeds across several Crown land reserves in the Maitland electorate, Member for Maitland Jenny Aitchison has announced.
The $39,994 grant, provided through the Crown Reserves Improvement Fund (CRIF), will support weed management at key sites including Walka Water Works, Glebe Cemetery, Morpeth Park, East Maitland and other areas within Maitland. The funding is administered by Crown Lands within the Department of Planning, Housing and Infrastructure.
Ms Aitchison said the funding will help preserve the health and accessibility of public reserves. “It’s fantastic that $39,994 has been allocated to Maitland which will be put to good use to protect our beautiful reserves,” she said. “Controlling noxious weeds is vital to keep our reserves healthy and functional for community use and to protect the environment for native animals and plants.”
She also noted the importance of clean reserves for local enjoyment, adding, “Weed free land provides a better experience for visitors and the local community to enjoy walking, bird watching, photography or learning about native flora and fauna.”
Minister for Lands and Property Steve Kamper said the funding forms part of a broader $11.18 million investment through CRIF to maintain and upgrade reserves across New South Wales. “The Minns Labor Government is focused on building better communities and these projects will keep our public reserves safe and healthy and support industry and the cultural, sporting and recreational life of communities to benefit many thousands of people,” Mr Kamper said.
Crown reserves across the state are used for recreation, environmental conservation and to support local organisations.
