newy.com.au – A kangaroo rescue in the Cessnock has ended in both heartbreak and hope after a female roo was found jammed between two shipping containers near Cessnock late on the night of 24 June.

Hunter Wildlife Rescue responded to a distress call just before midnight, finding the animal tightly wedged with no way to free herself. The group was unable to reach her without assistance, prompting a call to the Cessnock Volunteer Rescue Association (VRA), who arrived with hydraulic tools typically used for vehicle extractions. Volunteers used the equipment to gently prise open the containers and access the stricken kangaroo.

Despite being freed, the adult roo was in a critical state, unable to stand and severely fatigued. “We monitored her from a distance over the next few hours in the hope it was just lactic acid build-up,” the group said. “Sadly, she passed away, likely from the extreme stress of her ordeal.”

There was some good news. Inside the mother’s pouch was a healthy joey weighing approximately one kilogram. The young kangaroo is now in care and reportedly doing well.

Hunter Wildlife Rescue thanked the Cessnock VRA in a social media post, saying, “Your work saved a life.” Community members have since flooded social media with tributes and messages of support, praising the dedication of volunteers and mourning the loss of the mother kangaroo.
