newy.com.au – A man is set to appear in court today after allegedly breaking into a landslip-damaged home in New Lambton during the early hours of the morning.
Police were called to a property on Russell Road around 1.35am on Wednesday, 25 June, following reports of a suspected break-in. Officers from Newcastle City Police District began scouring the area and soon spotted a man allegedly scaling the boundary fence of the premises. After a short foot chase, the 28-year-old was arrested nearby.
During a search, officers allegedly found the man in possession of stolen items including bank cards, electronics, perfume bottles, watches, and other jewellery. His backpack also allegedly contained a machete, a balaclava, and tools commonly associated with break-ins.
The man, from Lake Macquarie, was taken to Waratah Police Station where he was charged with multiple offences, including breaking and entering, possessing housebreaking tools, carrying a cutting weapon at the time of arrest, and disguising his face with intent to commit a serious offence.
He was refused bail and is scheduled to face Parramatta Local Court today, Wednesday 25 June 2025.
The New Lambton landslip on 23 May 2025, triggered by heavy rain, forced the evacuation of at least 15 homes across several streets and damaged key infrastructure, affected residents continue to face long-term disruption and concerns over looting in the area.
