A woman has died following a crash in North Lambton early this morning, prompting a critical incident investigation by police.

Emergency services were called to Newcastle Road around 2.40am on Sunday, 22 June, after a Holden Commodore collided with a Hyundai sedan not long after officers spotted the Commodore allegedly being driven dangerously. Police had not engaged in a pursuit, citing safety concerns.

It’s understood the Commodore was first sighted bearing unauthorised number plates in Wallsend. Officers signalled for the vehicle to stop, but it allegedly continued driving in a dangerous manner. A second police vehicle later observed the car again crossing onto the incorrect side of the road before losing sight of it. A short time later, the crash occurred on Newcastle Road, North Lambton.

The crash claimed the life of a woman believed to be in her 50s, who was a passenger in the Hyundai. She died at the scene, and formal identification is yet to be confirmed. The Hyundai’s driver, a 28-year-old woman who was 25 weeks pregnant, was treated by NSW Ambulance paramedics and taken to John Hunter Hospital in a serious condition. Police have since confirmed that she lost her unborn child as a result of the crash.

Before officers arrived, the driver and front passenger of the Holden reportedly fled the scene on foot. Two teenage girls, aged 15 and 17, who were in the back seat of the Holden, were treated by paramedics and remain in serious condition at John Hunter Hospital.

Police have released a description of a man seen in the area who may be able to assist with inquiries. He is described as being of Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander appearance, in his late teens, about 165 cm tall, thin build, with brown hair and brown eyes.

A crime scene has been established, and investigators from the Hunter Valley Police District are examining the events leading up to the crash. Oversight will be provided by the Professional Standards Command and the Law Enforcement Conduct Commission, as is protocol in incidents involving prior police contact.

Authorities are urging anyone who may have dashcam footage or other information to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or via the website.
