newy.com.au – A $115.5 million investment from the Minns Labor Government will see the creation of a Newcastle Logistics Precinct, aimed at bolstering the delivery of renewable energy across New South Wales.
Announced as part of the 2025-26 NSW Budget, the precinct will be established at the former BHP Steelworks Intertrade site next to the Port of Newcastle. It is set to become a key storage and transport hub for vital equipment, such as wind turbines and transformers, required for renewable energy projects statewide.
The development will feature a newly paved laydown area, enabling the safe storage of large components before they are transported by heavy vehicles to renewable energy zones. The state’s road network is already undergoing upgrades to accommodate this increased transport activity, while also delivering improved infrastructure for local communities.
EnergyCo is collaborating with the Port of Newcastle to streamline the logistics chain between the port and the renewable energy zones. The project forms part of a broader energy transformation strategy underway in the Hunter region, which also includes road upgrades between the port and renewable energy zones, the Hunter Transmission Project, and the Hunter Central Coast Renewable Energy Zone.
The precinct will also respect the site’s historical significance. The nearby Newcastle Steelworks Memorial will be preserved, and several buildings on the site are being considered for heritage listing.
The project is subject to planning and environmental approvals, with an Environmental Impact Statement and a public exhibition period included in the process.
Minister for Climate Change and Energy, Penny Sharpe, said the precinct is a crucial component of NSW’s energy overhaul. “With solar and wind projects advancing across the state, the Newcastle Logistics Precinct will enhance our ability to store and move the large-scale equipment needed to build the renewable energy projects that will power our future,” she said.
Minister for the Hunter, Yasmin Catley, highlighted the local benefits. “This precinct will position the Hunter as a key player in NSW’s energy future, attracting investment in clean technology and creating new opportunities for local businesses and communities,” she said.
Member for Newcastle, Tim Crakanthorp, added, “Newcastle’s proud history in energy and manufacturing will continue as we transition to renewables. The Intertrade site is perfectly suited for this project, and we will ensure its heritage value is respected.”
