newy.com.au – Newcastle Airport is set to enter a new era of global travel, with Jetstar launching the region’s first year-round international route to Bali from 21 October 2025. The budget airline, which began its very first commercial service from Newcastle over two decades ago, will now reconnect with the city in a significant way, offering thrice-weekly flights to Denpasar.
This historic step marks the beginning of international operations from Newcastle’s soon-to-be-completed terminal, part of a $250 million upgrade aimed at transforming the airport into a true global gateway for the Hunter region. Travellers will be able to fly directly to Bali every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday, cutting out the need for a trip to Sydney and slashing travel time to just under six hours.
Newcastle Airport CEO Linc Horton described the move as a landmark moment, praising the long-standing relationship with Jetstar and highlighting the potential for growth in both tourism and regional connectivity. “This is just the start,” Mr Horton said, noting that discussions are already underway with other carriers to add more international destinations in the future.
The new terminal, expected to be ready by August 2025, is designed to handle increased passenger numbers and offer a seamless experience for international flyers. The addition of international flights is forecast to carry over 70,000 passengers annually, bolstering local tourism and business links with Indonesia.
Jetstar Group CEO Stephanie Tully called the Newcastle-Bali route a key milestone in the airline’s expansion strategy, making it easier and more affordable for regional residents to travel abroad. Meanwhile, Newcastle Airport Chair Jude Munro AO underscored the long-term vision of positioning the airport as a vital hub for both domestic and international travel in New South Wales.
Minister for Jobs and Tourism Steve Kamper welcomed the development as a strong vote of confidence in the region’s economic and tourism future. “This is more than a new flight — it’s a signal that Newcastle and the Hunter are ready to take their place on the international stage,” he said.
Jetstar is offering launch fares from $199 one-way for a limited time, while Newcastle Airport is promoting affordable parking options to complement the new route.
