newy.com.au – Hunter Street’s transformation is forging ahead, with the City of Newcastle set to launch the next phase of its East End Village revitalisation from next week. Construction crews will move in to begin upgrades on Hunter Street between Thorn and Wolfe streets, and Wolfe Street itself, spanning from King to Scott streets.

The upcoming works will introduce new paving, footpaths and road surfaces, aiming to make the precinct more inviting for pedestrians, cyclists and motorists. Essential infrastructure such as stormwater pipes will also be replaced, as the city reimagines the Hunter Street Mall in the form of a more traditional high street setting.

This phase will also see the installation of street lighting, public furniture, and greenery, with the northern two-way cycleway set for a further extension. It follows the completion of major works between Perkins and Brown streets, which reopened to the public earlier this month after a series of underground investigations and upgrades.

Robert Dudgeon, Interim Executive Director of City Infrastructure, said the improvements reflect the community’s input into the East End Streetscape Masterplan. “We’re delivering a high street that supports boutique retail and alfresco dining, thanks to a collaborative vision shaped by locals,” he said.

By the time this stage wraps up, over $16 million will have been invested in the precinct, with the city taking a staggered approach to reduce disruption and coordinate with private developments like those from Iris Capital. This marks the third of five planned stages, with design already underway for future upgrades stretching further along Hunter Street, targeting completion within the current Council term.
