newy.com.au – Newcastle’s historic post office is a step closer to being revived, with City of Newcastle approving modified plans for its redevelopment. The updated proposal, lodged by owner Dr Jerry Schwartz, paves the way for a $3.6 million transformation into a conference centre, café, retail precinct and Aboriginal cultural space.

The latest approval follows a previous development green light in 2021, with changes since made to the building layout and use. An earlier proposal to add an extra level was withdrawn after concerns raised by heritage experts and council design advisors. The revised plans will now retain the building’s original form while allowing for new uses inside.

Built in 1903, the Newcastle Post Office is a striking example of Federation-era architecture, reflecting the city’s economic confidence during the coal boom of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. It served as a central postal and communications hub for nearly a century before closing in 2001. The building was added to the NSW Heritage Register in December 2000.

City of Newcastle CEO Jeremy Bath acknowledged the complex nature of restoring a heritage-listed structure but said the approval allows long-awaited progress. “We’re pleased to see the project move forward. It’s an iconic building, and this plan keeps its character intact while giving it new life,” he said.

Lord Mayor Ross Kerridge welcomed the news, noting the frustration felt in the community over the building’s long period of inactivity since its sale by the federal government. “I’ve had positive discussions with Dr Schwartz and I’m encouraged by his commitment to the site,” he said.

Key heritage features such as stone columns, arcades, fireplaces and timber windows will be carefully restored as part of the works. A glass roof will be installed over the first-floor terrace, and two original fireplaces in the proposed function space will be reinstated.

Michelle Bisson, Executive Director of Planning and Environment, said the changes did not substantially alter the original design. “This development keeps the integrity of the original proposal and brings exciting features that will activate the site while respecting its heritage,” she said.
