A 40-metre trail of glitter and glue has sparked environmental concern in Redhead, after vandals left behind a mess that experts say could damage fragile wetland ecosystems for decades.
The sparkling path, laced with plastic stars and animal-shaped fragments, was discovered at the western end of the Ken and Audrey Owens Walkway, close to a protected paperbark wetland. While visually eye-catching, the material is composed entirely of microplastics – particles known for their harmful impact on aquatic life and the broader environment.
Lake Macquarie City Council’s Manager of Environmental Systems, Brendan Callander, said the choice of location made the incident especially serious. “The trail crosses a bridge over wetlands of State significance,” he said. “Every step taken by walkers is likely dislodging tiny bits of glitter that can easily wash or blow into the water, where they persist and pose a threat to wildlife.”
Glitter is considered a microplastic from the outset – resistant to breaking down and prone to spreading through ecosystems. Mr Callander labelled the act as one of the most damaging of its kind that Council officers had encountered, warning that even well-intentioned disposal of plastics can lead to long-term consequences if not managed correctly.
Specialist contractors have been called in to assess how to clean the site without causing further harm. Mr Callander noted the complexity of the job, saying, “The last thing we want is to exacerbate the issue by disturbing the particles even more.”
Under NSW environmental legislation, those responsible could face fines of up to $5000. Council is appealing to the public for assistance, urging anyone with information to phone 4921 0333.
