newy.com.au – The Labor Government have pledged $750,000 towards new youth facilities at Medowie, including a skate park, at the heart of the town centre.

Federal Member for Paterson, Meryl Swanson, made the announcement on Wednesday, 9 April 2025, saying the funding will go to Port Stephens Council to support development within the proposed expansion of the Medowie Town Centre, as outlined in the Medowie Place Plan.

The push for upgraded youth spaces comes after more than 1,200 residents signed a petition calling for new facilities, arguing that the existing skate park on Ferodale Road no longer meets the needs of the growing community.

The proposed development is expected to align with other major projects in the area, including the construction of Medowie High School, scheduled for completion by 2027, under the direction of State MP for Port Stephens, Kate Washington, and the NSW Government.

Ms Swanson said it was important to provide facilities that kept up with Medowie’s rapid growth. “With a new High School due in Medowie by 2027, committing to have more youth facilities like this skate park, in the centre of town, is important to me. It shows what can be achieved when all levels of government work together,” she said.

Kate Washington echoed those sentiments, pointing to Medowie’s changing demographics. “There are many new families moving into Medowie. The community have been calling for more things for our kids to do,” she said.

Port Stephens Mayor Leah Anderson said the funding would help deliver on council’s long-term vision. “We know how important it is for young people to have recreational spaces close to where they live. This funding will help Port Stephens Council deliver our place plan and create a thriving town centre,” Cr Anderson said.
