newy.com.au – Construction is now underway on significant road upgrades in Newcastle’s western suburbs, with work commencing on a $40 million project to dual key sections of Minmi Road and Longworth Avenue in Wallsend. The project aims to tackle long-standing traffic issues and ease daily congestion for the thousands commuting through the area.
The City of Newcastle has engaged Daracon to undertake early groundwork, laying the foundations for the future lane expansions. The upgrades are expected to be completed by mid-2026, bringing long-term benefits to residents, commuters and school communities in the fast-growing western corridor.
Lord Mayor Ross Kerridge highlighted the importance of the project, thanking the NSW Government for its $7.61 million contribution through the Accelerated Infrastructure Fund. He said the initiative was strongly backed by Council and the local community, promising improved travel times and road safety.
Planning and Public Spaces Minister Paul Scully said the roadworks are a vital part of supporting housing growth, with more than 3,000 new homes planned for the surrounding area. “Wider roads mean fewer bottlenecks and more livable neighbourhoods as we continue to build better communities,” he said.
Hunter Minister Yasmin Catley echoed the sentiment, emphasising the long-term value of the upgrades. “We’re investing now to future-proof the Hunter. This is about getting people where they need to go safely and efficiently, not just today, but for decades to come.”
City Infrastructure Executive Director Clint Thomson said the works also include vital underground improvements, such as stormwater upgrades and water main renewals, helping to improve the region’s water security. He noted the collaborative approach between City of Newcastle and Daracon in minimising disruption during the build.
Ward Four Councillors Elizabeth Adamczyk, Deahnna Richardson and Deputy Lord Mayor Callum Pull praised the project as the city’s largest roadwork investment to date. They noted it would support not just vehicle traffic, but also pedestrians, cyclists and public transport users, offering a more integrated transport solution for the community.
Further updates on the project can be found on the City of Newcastle’s official website.
