Eighty little corellas were released at Carrington on Sunday, 31 March, following a coordinated recovery and rehabilitation effort involving wildlife volunteers, veterinary professionals, and government agencies. The birds had been recovering after a suspected poisoning incident that affected hundreds of birds across Newcastle earlier in March.

The NSW Environment Protection Authority (EPA) confirmed that it is continuing its investigation into the incident, which occurred on 17 March and saw corellas and other native birds exhibiting severe neurological symptoms. These included bleeding, seizures, and paralysis. The EPA is focusing on the potential misuse of pesticide products and is working with the Australian Registry of Wildlife Health to determine the exact cause.

Volunteers from Hunter Wildlife Rescue (Native Animal Trust Fund) and WIRES were among the first responders. The EPA’s media release confirmed that 107 birds were rescued during the incident. They were triaged and treated by veterinary staff, including those from Hamilton Veterinary Clinic. Of those rescued, approximately 80 have now recovered and been deemed fit for release.

The release took place at the same Carrington site where many of the birds were originally found unwell or dying. The EPA and wildlife carers have emphasised the importance of returning the birds to familiar territory to maximise their chances of reintegrating into local flocks.

The EPA has called on the public to assist in the ongoing investigation. Anyone with information about the use of pesticides or any unusual activity in the area around the time of the incident is urged to contact the EPA’s Environment Line on 131 555.

Under the Pesticides Act 1999, individuals can face penalties if found to have misused regulated substances, especially when the misuse leads to environmental harm or the death of native wildlife.

Further toxicology results are pending. The EPA says it will release findings when available.
