MAC yapang Curator Jasmine Kean (right) chats with Kat Valentine on the new artwork
newy.com.au – A striking new art installation is set to make waves in Lake Macquarie, encouraging residents to pause, connect, and share their stories. A Place To Chat, created by Victorian artist Abbey Rich, will be officially unveiled on Saturday, 29 March 2025, at the Museum of Art and Culture, yapang’s Sculpture Park in Booragul.
The interactive sculpture, developed in collaboration with local community members during workshops focused on mental health and art, aims to spark meaningful conversations and reflection. MAC yapang Curator Jasmine Kean described the piece as both artistic and practical – a space that invites not just observation, but engagement.
“It’s more than just something to look at,” Ms Kean said. “It grounds people in the present moment, creating space for stillness and openness. It encourages dialogue and sharing of personal experiences.”
The launch event coincides with the Lake Macquarie and Newcastle Suicide Prevention Network’s Hope Day at nearby Booragul Reserve. Attendees can expect live entertainment, a free BBQ lunch, and access to local mental health and wellbeing services – all designed to foster community connection and support.
Inspired by the international ‘Happy to Chat’ movement, the sculpture’s design incorporates local voices, particularly those with lived experience of mental health challenges. Rich’s vision ensures the piece remains a welcoming site for conversation and connection well into the future.
The project has been supported by the Australian Government through Creative Australia, with additional backing from Create NSW and a donation from the LMNSPN.
