newy.com.au – Kurri Kurri Minor Rugby League will soon be shining a little brighter, with a $300,000 boost from the NSW Government set to fund the installation of LED lighting at the club’s playing fields.

The funding, announced on Monday, 24 March 2025, is part of the second round of the 2024/25 Infrastructure Grants Program and was welcomed by Clayton Barr, Member for the Electorate of Cessnock.

“This is fantastic news for the Kurri Kurri community,” Mr Barr said. “Upgrading the lighting will not only improve safety but also allow for night games and community events, giving local sport a much-needed lift.”

The Infrastructure Grants Program is supported by ClubGrants Category 3 – a scheme that channels a portion of profits from gaming machines in registered clubs into community projects, in exchange for tax concessions.

This round sees 37 projects funded across New South Wales, building on the $6.44 million already delivered to 46 initiatives in July 2024. Since the program began in 2013, more than $152 million has been distributed to over 880 community-driven projects across four key areas: sport and recreation, disaster readiness, community infrastructure, and arts and culture.

Minister for Gaming and Racing David Harris said the grants help strengthen local communities and improve quality of life.

“These projects deliver more than just bricks and mortar – they connect people, encourage participation, and help communities thrive,” he said. “Congratulations to all the successful applicants. I’m eager to see the positive impacts these upgrades will bring.”
