Jim’s Dairy Delites: Newcastle’s Historic Milk Bar SOLD and Undergoing Restoration Newy Staff
Newcastle residents have been left alarmed after dozens of birds, primarily little corellas, were found dead or in distress across multiple suburbs, sparking an investigation by the New South Wales Environment Protection Authority (EPA).
The EPA confirmed it received reports early Monday morning and has since dispatched officers to assess several locations, collect samples, and determine whether a pesticide-related poisoning event has occurred.
Hunter Wildlife Rescue, which has been actively responding to the crisis, reported that over 50 birds had already been found in Newcastle, Carrington, and Hamilton. With numbers expected to rise, rescuers fear a mass poisoning event could be unfolding.
Testing will include ruling out avian influenza while also assessing potential exposure to toxic substances. The EPA has reminded the public that the misuse of pesticides, if found responsible, carries severe penalties of up to $500,000 for individuals and $2 million for corporations.
Authorities and wildlife groups are urging the community to assist in the investigation.
Report distressed or deceased birds: Contact Hunter Wildlife Rescue on 0418 628 483.
Provide information to authorities: Anyone with knowledge of pesticide use in the area can call the EPA’s 24/7 Environment Line at 131 555, quoting reference REF-NO-37180.
Take injured birds to a vet: Vets across Newcastle have been contacted to track cases and provide treatment where possible.
Mass wildlife deaths raise serious environmental concerns, and experts are watching closely for further impacts. Newcastle has seen similar events in the past, though the scale of this incident remains unclear.
With testing underway and investigations ongoing, authorities hope to determine the cause quickly and take any necessary action to prevent further harm.
