newy.com.au – Martinsville residents and transport operators can now enjoy smoother and safer journeys following the completion of three newly upgraded bridges in the valley.
The bridges, located along Owens Road and Pointers Road, were reconstructed over the past year to meet modern safety and load-bearing standards. These upgrades enhance access to around 50 semi-rural properties while ensuring emergency services can reach the area without delay.
Lake Macquarie Mayor Adam Shultz highlighted the significance of the project, highlighting the benefits for residents, transport, and emergency services.
“These new structures not only improve property access and transport through the Martinsville valley but also guarantee that emergency services can respond efficiently when needed,” he said.
The $11.8 million project was primarily funded by the Australian Government’s Safer Local Roads and Infrastructure program, which contributed over $7.5 million. Additional funding came from Lake Macquarie City Council, which provided $2.6 million, and the NSW Government, which allocated more than $1.6 million through the Fixing Country Roads program for the Owens Road Bridge.
Federal Minister for Regional Development and Local Government Kristy McBain said the upgrades would make a significant difference for locals and freight operators.
“As someone who spends countless hours on the road across NSW, I understand the importance of reliable regional and rural road networks,” she said.
“Heavy freight trucks and Martinsville residents can now travel along Owens Road and Pointers Road with confidence, thanks to these much-needed upgrades.”
Federal Member for Hunter Dan Repacholi welcomed the improvements, noting the importance of replacing ageing timber bridges with modern, durable infrastructure.
“This long-term fix is a big win for the community, ensuring that everyone – from truck drivers to emergency responders and families heading to school or work can travel safely,” he said.
State Minister for Regional Transport and Roads Jenny Aitchison praised the collaboration between all levels of government to deliver the upgrades.
“The Martinsville project is a great example of different levels of government working together to deliver for regional communities,” she said.
“This investment ensures people stay connected with the roads and transport routes they rely on.”
The construction work was led by Daracon Group for the two Owens Road bridges, while Toisch Pty Ltd handled the Pointers Road bridge. The project was completed on time and under budget, marking a successful step forward for Martinsville’s transport infrastructure.
