Jesmond Traffic Stop Uncovers Drugs and Cash, Man Charged

newy.com.au – A 62-year-old man has been arrested in Jesmond, Newcastle, following the discovery of illicit drugs and cash during a routine police patrol. Around 10:30 pm on Friday, 28 February 2025, officers from the Newcastle City Police District stopped a vehicle on Heaton Street. Upon searching the car, they uncovered 8.06 grams of methylamphetamine, cannabis, and a sum of cash. The man was taken into custody and charged with supplying a prohibited drug and three counts of possessing a prohibited drug. He has been granted conditional bail and is scheduled to appear at Newcastle Local Court on Tuesday, 11 March 2025.

According to the Daily Telegraph, the man is the brother of NSW Police Minister Yasmin Catley, who is also the minister for the Hunter, it is understood that she had disclosed her family situation to Police Commissioner when she accepted the police portfolio.

This incident follows a similar case earlier in February 2025, where a man was apprehended in Wallsend after police allegedly found over 250 grams of methylamphetamine concealed in his clothing during a traffic stop.
