newy.com.au – Women and girls of all ages and abilities are invited to explore a wide variety of sports when the Lake Mac Women in Sport Festival sets sail from 7-16 March 2025. This annual celebration is designed to boost female participation in sports through fun, engaging, and inclusive activities.
The festival kicks off with the popular Try a Sport Expo, held alongside Music in the Podium at Warners Bay Foreshore from 6-9pm on Friday 7 March. Attendees will have the chance to sample sports like tennis, rugby, croquet, and aikido, with local sporting groups providing hands-on experiences. Minister for Women Jodie Harrison and Lake Macquarie Mayor Adam Shultz will officially launch the event, encouraging more women and girls to get active.
Tennis NSW is also set to play a big role in the festival, participating in the expo and hosting women’s intermediate and advanced open tournaments, followed by a special dinner on Saturday 15 March. Tennis NSW’s Women and Girls Lead, former professional player Casey Dellacqua, highlighted the importance of such events in closing the gender gap in sports participation and leadership.
“We take pride in leading the way for positive change in tennis, ensuring there are no barriers for women and girls on or off the court,” Dellacqua said. “This festival provides a fantastic opportunity to encourage more women and girls to pick up a racquet, stay active, and take on leadership roles within the sport.”
Sailing enthusiasts can also get on board with the Speers Point Amateur Sailing Club, which will host its inaugural Women in Sport Festival Yardstick Racing event on 15 March. The event is open to all off-the-beach classes, welcoming both beginners and experienced sailors to the stunning waters of Lake Macquarie.
Club President Bill Gearing emphasised the club’s commitment to inclusivity in sport. “A diverse and welcoming sporting environment makes participation more enjoyable and rewarding,” he said. “Sailing is a fantastic way to stay active at any age, and introducing more people to the sport benefits the community’s overall health and wellbeing.”
