newy.com.au – Progress is being made on the future of the historic Tomaree Lodge site, with the NSW Government announcing the establishment of an on-site office and the appointment of two site officers.
Set to officially commence their roles in March 2025, the officers will be based in Cottage 11 near the site’s entrance. Their responsibilities will include overseeing operations, enhancing community safety, and supporting visitors. The office will also serve as an information hub, keeping the public informed about ongoing developments at Tomaree Lodge.
The Minns Labor Government has reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining the site for public use and recreation while preserving its cultural and environmental significance. As part of this process, six local residents from Port Stephens were appointed last year to provide community input to the NSW Government Steering Committee, which is responsible for developing the master plan for the site.
This committee brings together representatives from key government agencies, including the Department of Communities and Justice, National Parks and Wildlife Services, Create NSW, the Department of Planning, Housing & Infrastructure, and NSW Fisheries, alongside Port Stephens Council.
In addition, leading local planning firm SHAC has been engaged to spearhead the concept master planning. Known for their expertise in complex planning and community consultation, SHAC will play a pivotal role in shaping the future vision for Tomaree Lodge.
Minister for Disability Inclusion and Member for Port Stephens, Kate Washington, emphasised the government’s dedication to ensuring the community remains at the heart of the decision-making process.
“Tomaree Headland is one of the most breathtaking and significant places in Port Stephens, and the Minns Labor Government is committed to ensuring its future is shaped by the community that cherishes it,” Minister Washington said.
“The new on-site office and dedicated staff will provide a stronger presence at Tomaree Lodge, improving safety, supporting visitors, and keeping locals informed as planning progresses. We are keeping Tomaree Lodge in public hands, protecting its rich cultural and environmental significance, and ensuring it remains a place for locals and visitors to enjoy for generations to come.”
Port Stephens Mayor and chair of the Tomaree Lodge Community Engagement Committee, Leah Anderson, also welcomed the announcement, noting that an on-site presence is a crucial step in securing the site’s future.
“Tomaree Lodge holds a special place in the hearts of our community, and this is an important step in securing its future,” Mayor Anderson said.
“Having a dedicated on-site presence will help ensure the site is safe, welcoming, and well cared for. I’m proud to be working with our community and the NSW Government to help shape a plan that reflects local priorities and protects this iconic place for generations to come.”
The future of Tomaree Lodge continues to be a key focus for the Port Stephens community, with plans prioritising heritage preservation, environmental sustainability, and public accessibility.
