newy.com.au – Maitland’s key transport hub is set for a major revitalisation, with Maitland City Council securing $1 million through the NSW Government’s reVITALise – Public Transport Precinct Vibrancy Grant. The Next Stop: Maitland project will enhance the Maitland Station precinct, creating a safer, more welcoming space for commuters, residents, and visitors.
Maitland Mayor Philip Penfold highlighted the project’s importance, stating, “Maitland Station is a key gateway to our city, and this project provides an exciting opportunity to strengthen its role as a central hub in the Hunter region. By incorporating community input, we aim to create a space that prioritises safety, accessibility, and connectivity, fostering pride among all who use it.”
The planned improvements will strengthen links between Maitland Station and key locations such as Maitland Park, Maitland Regional Art Gallery, and the CBD. Additionally, the project will complement other regional initiatives, including the Morpeth to Rutherford Shared Pathway Project, reinforcing Maitland Station’s role as a vital connector within the Hunter region.
Maitland is one of seven councils selected for the reVITALise pilot program, a $7 million initiative by Transport for NSW aimed at enhancing public transport precincts. The grant will support improvements such as new seating, shade, lighting, landscaping, public art, and infrastructure like bike racks and phone charging stations.
Brooke Wharton, A/Executive Director of Cities Revitalisation and Place at Transport for NSW, pointed to the success of similar placemaking initiatives, such as the reVITALise Stanmore Station Parcels Office and the Rainbow Tunnels project, which demonstrated how creative interventions can improve public safety and engagement.
To ensure the redevelopment aligns with community needs, Maitland City Council has launched an online survey and will host a series of walkshops—walking workshops that invite public input. Mayor Penfold encouraged residents to get involved, stating, “We encourage everyone to tell us what improvements you’d like to see around Maitland Station by completing our community survey or joining a walkshop, so we can create a space that inspires connection and vibrancy.”
The survey is now live, with walkshops and co-design sessions scheduled for February and March 2025. Final project works are set to be completed by May 2026.
